These are general guidelines. Please follow the exact instructions of your surgeon/surgical team.
After Your Surgery
Recovery Area: You will be monitored in the recovery room until you are stable enough to go home, typically 1–2 hours, depending on the procedure and anesthesia.
Discharge Instructions: You will receive written instructions specific to your procedure, including wound care, activity restrictions, and signs of complications to watch for.
Pain Management: Take prescribed pain medications as directed. Do not take additional pain relievers without consulting your doctor.
Activity Restrictions: Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or driving for the time period specified (often 24–48 hours or longer, depending on the procedure). Rest and follow activity guidelines provided.
Wound Care: Keep the surgical site clean and dry. Follow instructions for dressing changes, bathing, or suture/staple care. Report signs of infection (redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge).
Diet: Resume eating as instructed, often starting with light foods like clear liquids or crackers. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours or while taking pain medications.
Follow-Up: Schedule and attend any follow-up appointments. Contact your surgeon if you experience fever, severe pain, excessive bleeding, or other concerning symptoms.
Emergency Contacts: Have contact information for the surgical center or your surgeon in case of questions or emergencies after hours.
